Asus is aiming high with its release of the new Transformer Pad Infinity. The high-end tablet will house the much-anticipated Nvidia Tegra 4 processor and boast an impressively high resolution screen that will likely cause Android aficionados to uncontrollably froth at the mouth in anticipation and maybe catch the wandering eye of a few Apple iPad loyalists.
The 10-inch tablet dons a 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution and houses Nvidia's latest 1.9GHz Tegra 4 processor with a 72-core GeForce GPU. Other specs include 4K output via HDMI, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front camera. The tablet has an optional accompanying keyboard dock that accommodates a multi-touchpad, USB 3.0 port, and SDXC card slot.
The Transformer Pad Infinity's design and shiny metallic finish is similar to its predecessor, theAsus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. The TF700 is a solid tablet with a beautiful screen but now outdated CPU. The upgrades to the new Infinity are excitingly relevant. Its high-resolution screen is matched by only a few other tablets and its zippy new CPU addresses some of the TF700's flaws.
The Transformer Pad Infinity's expected high-performance, coupled with its high PPI (pixels per inch) value of 300, could give the Google Nexus 10 some competition. The Nexus 10 is currently one of the best 10-inch tablets on the market with a 300 PPI that mirrors the new Asus tablet's. Aside from the 10-inch Google tablet's great performance, it's reasonably priced at $400 for a version with 16GB of internal storage.
Word on the street is that the Transformer Pad Infinity will also sell for about $400. If so, it will have an edge over the Nexus 10 with its increased internal storage, faster CPU, and option of a useful keyboard dock. Pricing has become a competitive determining factor of a tablet's appeal. Asus reasonably priced some of its other recent tablets but hasn't announced whether they will follow the same path with the new Infinity model.
Availability for the Transformer Pad Infinity tablet has yet to be announced so check back to CNET for more information as it becomes available.
